New York by Gehry at 8 Spruce Street

This is what happens when a developer with no taste (Ratner) hires an architect (Frank Gehry) whose deconstruction and whimsy is old news. You get an undulating building, an eyesore on the New York City skyline. It's new and already dated.

  1. It's incredible. What an icon, pushing architecture to its limits with enthralling results. So what that it's dated? Do you think that the 100 year old buildings in the photos on this site used to contrast with the modern aren't dated?

    1. I always liked Gehry. I know a lot of people don't, however. For example, a lot of people in Portland hated the one he built there (forget the name). The Seattle Experience Music Project was also somewhat of a controversy. Living in New York, I kind of thought that this one was cool, but you're right that it does seem somewhat out of place in lower Manhattan.

    2. It's the kind of building that is ok as long as you don't have to look at it

  2. To me it looks like a Gun. afaik its a loose tribute to the World Trade Center disaster as it resembles 2 buildings on fire. Its a beautiful building and one of the few "modernist" buildings I actually like.
